  • We Probably Don't Need To Worry About A Solar Superflare - Newsy

Transcript: Superflares: They're just what they sound like. Solar flares are releases of magnetic energy from the sun's atmosphere. Sometimes — but not always — they bombard Earth with high-energy plasma. Superflares are the same principle, just bigger. Researchers started cataloguing them with the Kepler space telescope a few years ago. They're easy to spot, even on distant stars, since they crank out about 10,000 times more energy than normal flares. And in a new study published in Nature, researchers say the sun is capable of emitting a superflare of its own — even if that's unlikely. Most superflares come from stars that are more magnetically active than our home star, but about 10 percent of the superflare examples researchers analyzed came from stars with similar or even weaker fi...

Most superflares come from stars that are more magnetically active than our home star, but about 10 percent of the superflare examples researchers analyzed came from stars with similar or even weaker fields. The closest thing we've ever seen to a superflare from the sun is probably the Carrington Event. In 1859, the sun launched a flare so energetic it damaged Earth's ozone layer and set telegraph offices on fire. Experts say a flare that powerful today could do billions of dollars in long-term damage to satellite networks and electrical transformers. Those aren't the sort of things we keep plenty of spares for. And Carrington was a relatively weak example compared to the energies involved in superflares. The good news, according to the researchers, is our solar activity records show these events only come along every millennium or so. What's more, we would probably see unprecedented sunspot activity beforehand, so at least we'd know it's coming. Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury or death. Heat generated from a Fresnel lens can exceed 2000ºF and cause serious damage to persons or property. Use of this video content is at your own risk. Project History & More Info: These TV's are old, extremely heavy, and are breaking down on people everywhere. They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free! I usually find mine on the classified adds under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash. PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! You can also see http://youtu.be/xExXjXm0YV0 for examples of these different lenses. It was brought to my attention that Kipkay did a project like a couple of years ago that he called the "Solar Death Ray". It's probably where FenceKid got the idea, which in turn, inspired me. You should check it out, a link will be in the description. It was later put forward again by Emil Enchev, who provided further proof that it was not a UFO but a solar array. Again, a link to his channel will be in the description. For the record, I am not saying it is not a true UFO, I am just saying that with the evidence provided to me, it seems unlikely. Here you can see the photograph of the UFO, which has appeared in a lot of media outlets lately. Here you can see the Nevada solar array named the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project. Take a close look at the shape. It has the same tail section as the structure in the photo which is said to be a UFO. They both are the same shape. In the same location. So the chances that they are the same object, is pretty high, given that they are such a unique shape and colour. It is also worth noting, as pointed out wisely by Shanti Universe, that the reflection from the solar panels is creating glare in the glass of the airplane window, giving out an effect as if light is emerging from the solar array. So it looks like it is not a UFO, in my opinion. Sometimes photographs like this are just too good to be true. From now on, I will make a greater effort to look more closely at the UFO pictures I post. This will not always be possible right away, but I will reflect on them, and if they turn out to be something else, then I will make a video on them. Michio Kaku: I believe in solar power, but there are problems that we have to face, and one of them is low efficiency. Michio Kaku: Some people think that the time is right for the solar revolution, that one day solar power will replace oil and we'll all live in a world that is clean and renewable.  Well, not so fast.  I believe in solar power.  However, there are problems that we have to face, and one of them is low efficiency.  The other one is lack of a storage facility like a battery.  That's' the weak link.  We simply don't have the efficiency of solar cells necessary to make it economical and competitive today, and the ability to store the energy for long periods of time when the sun is dark, when there are clouds and your solar panels don't work.So my point of view is this: I think in the coming decade, as oil prices start to rise and as the cost of wind and solar and renewables start to drop, the two currents will probably cross in maybe ten years.  So in ten years it will be the marketplace which then begins to drive the whole thing forward because of the dropping cost of solar cells and rising efficiency and the rising price of oil.  Now, why do I believe that oil prices will rise?  Because of something called Hubbert's Peak.  Hubbert was a Shell Oil engineer way back in the 1960s who predicted that we would hit the halfway point for the production of oil in the United States and after that the bell-shaped curve would curve the other way and we would become an importer of oil.  Well, people laughed at him because they said that, "Well, wait a minute.  We have Alaska.  We have Texas.  We have lots of oil fields, and so we're not going to hit the 50% point.  America will always export oil."  Well, wrong.  Hubbert hit it right on the nose to within the year at which US oil supplies peaked and then it went to the other side of the bell-shaped curve.  That's called Hubbert's Peak, when we hit the 50% point.  Now we know that Hubbard was right and the next big question is, are we hitting Hubbert's Peak for world oil production?  That is the $64,000 question.  Many people that I've talked to, senior oil analysts, energy analysts, say that we are either at Hubbert's Peak or within ten years of hitting Hubbert's Peak.  Now some people say, "Well that's stupid.  We discover new oil deposits all the time.  Look at Canada.  We have tar sands of Canada, right?"  Wrong.  It turns out that we will always have oil.  We will never run out of oil, except oil will become more expensive as we go down the other side of Hubbert's Peak.  We would have to discover a new Saudi Arabia every five to ten years in order for this curve to simply go on forever.  That's not going to happen.  I don't care how many tar sands you're talking about in Canada.  You're not going to create a new Saudi Arabia, which produces very clean, very cheap oil, oil that is prized by the oil companies because it is relatively less polluting and has tremendous amounts of profits associated with it.  So we do know that oil prices will fluctuate because of politics, but on average it will start to rise because we will be hitting Hubbert's Peak.  Meanwhile, solar power is going to become cheaper and in 10 years or so the two curves could actually cross, and in 20 years a new game changer arrives and that is fusion power.  The Europeans are betting the store on the ITER fusion reactor to be built outside Cadarache, France in Southern France, and if we have the power of the sun on the earth then sea water could drive all our machines.  So if this scenario plays out as I predict, it means that global warming could actually be a problem only for the next several decades as we enter the solar era and the fusion era.  The problem is we have already lofted so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and we will continue to do so for decades to come, that even before we enter the solar age and the fusion age we will have so much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that we will really screw up the weather.  But on a long-term basis I think that solar energy and fusion power will be the solution, the ultimate solution, for the greenhouse problem.  Directed / Produced byJonathan Fowler & Elizabeth Rodd

I probably won't be able to answer them all in this video, but I'll give you some basic facts so you can get a better idea of how it may be useful to you in everyday life. But, you should be aware that there are both positive and negative facts about solar energy to consider. Let's start with the answer to a basic question: what is solar energy. Solar energy comes from the light of the sun, not from heat. so even cold climates can produce power when the sun is shining. One of the most interesting positive facts about solar energy is its huge potential. The amount of sunlight that comes to earth in a single day - if it could be harnessed - would supply all the electricity needs for every human being on the planet for an entire year. Also, solar is a renewable energy resource that will last for a couple billion more years. We never run out. One of the most important facts about solar energy is that it doesn't hurt the atmosphere. It doesn't pollute or generate carbon dioxide, which a lot of people believe is changing global climate - and not for the better. There's also no noise pollution with solar energy. Electricity is created silently when sunlight hits a solar panel. The sunlight reacts with materials in the panel to produce an electrical charge. This charge can be converted to direct current (DC) to be used in homes. If a home with solar panels generates more power than the home uses, the homeowner may even be able to sell some of the excess to a power company for use on its electrical power grid. Electricity created by home solar energy can be used in dozens of ways - just like electricity from the power company. Heating water, running appliances and providing light are all possibilities for home solar energy. By making your home energy independent in this way, you also make your country more energy independent - freeing it from the need to import oil from other countries. When you have home solar energy, you don't need to worry about power outages - or rate increases by your utility company. Another of the more interesting facts about solar energy is its potential in the transportation industry, although admittedly, practical solar applications for mass transit in the U.S. are probably years away. Solar technology for cars has been developed, but it's not nearly advanced enough for the needs of modern vehicles yet. However, it's interesting to note that a couple of years ago a small aircraft powered strictly by solar energy flew across the entire United States. So those facts are about solar energy that sound positive and promising, But there are other facts that you need to understand.. For one thing, solar panels take up a lot of space. That means solar energy "farms" would have to be huge to provide a significant percentage of a large city's electricity supply. There's also large investment or up front cost to installing solar - especially in a home. It can take years to recover your investment, even though solar equipment is nearly maintenance-free once it's installed. Plus, some geographical areas are more suited to solar power than others. If you live in an area where it's gets cloudy a lot, solar energy may not be sufficient for your needs. Furthermore, your output from solar panels will be reduced if they are shaded by trees or other structures.

Graphene is a revolutionary material with a special atomic arrangement that gives it truly unique properties--such as transmitting electrical current faster than any other material. The very first application where graphene is going to be used is probably as a replacement for (the relatively expensive metal) indium selenide in solar cells. Research indicates that graphene is probably going to be massively adopted in the marketplace in a few years
