  • We Probably Don't Need To Worry About A Solar Superflare - Newsy

Transcript: Superflares: They're just what they sound like. Solar flares are releases of magnetic energy from the sun's atmosphere. Sometimes — but not always — they bombard Earth with high-energy plasma. Superflares are the same principle, just bigger. Researchers started cataloguing them with the Kepler space telescope a few years ago. They're easy to spot, even on distant stars, since they crank out about 10,000 times more energy than normal flares. And in a new study published in Nature, researchers say the sun is capable of emitting a superflare of its own — even if that's unlikely. Most superflares come from stars that are more magnetically active than our home star, but about 10 percent of the superflare examples researchers analyzed came from stars with similar or even weaker fi...

Maybe not so aerodynamic, but this velomobile is not supposed to be a racing machine but more to be a practical vehicle for everyday use.

  • Solar FREAKIN Roadways, are they real?

Solar FREAKIN roadways is a nice idea, but then again is a pogostick that can hop to the moon as a cheap, reusable trans-orbital vehicle. Is it plausible though. Well it basically proposes the union of 3 or 4 technologies. LED lights, solar panels, and glass roads. Glass really isn't a feasible material to make roads out of. 1) its too expensive. Just coating the US road system with roads would cost many times the federal budget. 2) Its too soft. Even with a textured surface for traction, it will wear away too quickly. Dirt on roads is basically small rocks, which are generally much harder than glass. Imagine taking a handful of dirt and rubbing it a window. Now imagine doing that with the wheels of a 20 ton tractor/trailer. 3) I have doubts about the physical properties of the gla...

Short video of how I hooked up the GAME solar water heaters to a solar powered water pump. With this flow rate the water coming out is 4 to 5 degrees warmer than the water going in. It was early June and the outside temps were probably 85 and the pool does seem to be 2 or 3 degrees warmer than this time last year (they have been hooked up for over a month now). If you decrease the flow rate the water will get actually very warm but as far as thermal transfer to the pool you probably wouldn't gain anything. These things get bad reviews on Amazon and I understand why. If you used a hi flow high pressure pump as suggested in the instructions I doubt there would be any heat transfer at all. But with this little solar water pump the pressure and flow are pretty low and I think its allowing...

While it would be really nice if this was a real 100000mAh (100Ah) power bank, it would be defying current battery technology quite dramatically. This is probably good, because a cheapo 100Ah power bank failing would be very "exciting". The odd thing is that beyond the very fake rating the unit is quite nicely made and seems to work well. You should check it out, a link will be in the description. It was later put forward again by Emil Enchev, who provided further proof that it was not a UFO but a solar array. Again, a link to his channel will be in the description. For the record, I am not saying it is not a true UFO, I am just saying that with the evidence provided to me, it seems unlikely. Here you can see the photograph of the UFO, which has appeared in a lot of media outlets lately. Here you can see the Nevada solar array named the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project. Take a close look at the shape. It has the same tail section as the structure in the photo which is said to be a UFO. They both are the same shape. In the same location. So the chances that they are the same object, is pretty high, given that they are such a unique shape and colour. It is also worth noting, as pointed out wisely by Shanti Universe, that the reflection from the solar panels is creating glare in the glass of the airplane window, giving out an effect as if light is emerging from the solar array. So it looks like it is not a UFO, in my opinion. Sometimes photographs like this are just too good to be true. From now on, I will make a greater effort to look more closely at the UFO pictures I post. This will not always be possible right away, but I will reflect on them, and if they turn out to be something else, then I will make a video on them. Most superflares come from stars that are more magnetically active than our home star, but about 10 percent of the superflare examples researchers analyzed came from stars with similar or even weaker fields. The closest thing we've ever seen to a superflare from the sun is probably the Carrington Event. In 1859, the sun launched a flare so energetic it damaged Earth's ozone layer and set telegraph offices on fire. Experts say a flare that powerful today could do billions of dollars in long-term damage to satellite networks and electrical transformers. Those aren't the sort of things we keep plenty of spares for. And Carrington was a relatively weak example compared to the energies involved in superflares. The good news, according to the researchers, is our solar activity records show these events only come along every millennium or so. What's more, we would probably see unprecedented sunspot activity beforehand, so at least we'd know it's coming. I probably won't be able to answer them all in this video, but I'll give you some basic facts so you can get a better idea of how it may be useful to you in everyday life. But, you should be aware that there are both positive and negative facts about solar energy to consider. Let's start with the answer to a basic question: what is solar energy. Solar energy comes from the light of the sun, not from heat. so even cold climates can produce power when the sun is shining. One of the most interesting positive facts about solar energy is its huge potential. The amount of sunlight that comes to earth in a single day - if it could be harnessed - would supply all the electricity needs for every human being on the planet for an entire year. Also, solar is a renewable energy resource that will last for a couple billion more years. We never run out. One of the most important facts about solar energy is that it doesn't hurt the atmosphere. It doesn't pollute or generate carbon dioxide, which a lot of people believe is changing global climate - and not for the better. There's also no noise pollution with solar energy. Electricity is created silently when sunlight hits a solar panel. The sunlight reacts with materials in the panel to produce an electrical charge. This charge can be converted to direct current (DC) to be used in homes. If a home with solar panels generates more power than the home uses, the homeowner may even be able to sell some of the excess to a power company for use on its electrical power grid. Electricity created by home solar energy can be used in dozens of ways - just like electricity from the power company. Heating water, running appliances and providing light are all possibilities for home solar energy. By making your home energy independent in this way, you also make your country more energy independent - freeing it from the need to import oil from other countries. When you have home solar energy, you don't need to worry about power outages - or rate increases by your utility company. Another of the more interesting facts about solar energy is its potential in the transportation industry, although admittedly, practical solar applications for mass transit in the U.S. are probably years away. Solar technology for cars has been developed, but it's not nearly advanced enough for the needs of modern vehicles yet. However, it's interesting to note that a couple of years ago a small aircraft powered strictly by solar energy flew across the entire United States. So those facts are about solar energy that sound positive and promising, But there are other facts that you need to understand.. For one thing, solar panels take up a lot of space. That means solar energy "farms" would have to be huge to provide a significant percentage of a large city's electricity supply. There's also large investment or up front cost to installing solar - especially in a home. It can take years to recover your investment, even though solar equipment is nearly maintenance-free once it's installed. Plus, some geographical areas are more suited to solar power than others. If you live in an area where it's gets cloudy a lot, solar energy may not be sufficient for your needs. Furthermore, your output from solar panels will be reduced if they are shaded by trees or other structures.

It is obviously designed to be used in cities and in the traffic so it has pretty big ground clearance, most probably very good turning circle, full cover etc.The solar panels are integrated in the roof and on the rear side which gives it a very special look. Maybe not so aerodynamic, but this velomobile is not supposed to be a racing machine but more to be a practical vehicle for everyday use.

Stirling Engine range having as a heat source the sun through a satellite 60 cm in diameter, lined with approximately 6000 mm 10 x 10 mirrors whose focus focuses at the focal point at a temperature exceeding 750th C, printing a speed above 1000 the engine rpm. A satellite model of satellite TV signal capture was used, adapted to for this purpose. Hot roll stainless steel, brass power cylinder and graphite piston. Totally done in backyard workshop, probably the first model range that runs solar energy made in Brazil. It can be used to provide electrical power coupling it to a small generator, and consequently provide loads the batteries, lighting the emergence of LEDs and other purposes.

3) I have doubts about the physical properties of the glass to take the load and mechanical heat stress required of a road making material. Solar panels under the road is a bad idea from the start. If they are under the roads, they are hard to maintain. They will have reduced light from parked cars etc. They are fragile. Not really congenial to the conditions you are likely to get on a road. In many ways building a shed over the road, or just having solar panels by the side of the road is a far better idea. However the power transport really isnt practical. One of the most efficient ways to transport electricity around is as high voltage AC. However to build those lines would probably double the cost of any construction. To bury the cables is even more expensive. LEDs for variable road marking have been partially implemented. They are usually only cost effective in dynamic traffic management systems. For most roads its utterly pointless as the road markings almost never need to be altered. These LED are usually not easy to see (especially in full daylight when the solar panels are meant to be generating power). However solar powered roadways has generated well over a million dollars for Julie and Scott Brusaw (a therapist and an engineer). I'm still on the fence as to if they are just delusional dreamers or (now millionaire) con artists. A lot of this looks like just direct 'what if' daydreaming, but then you get the part of the promotional video where they are shoveling ground up coloured glass into a wheelbarrow, while narrating that they use as many recycled materials as possible in this project. It's very difficult to not see that as a direct lie. They must know full well that they did not use any of that material in the construction of their glass tiles. But with this little solar water pump the pressure and flow are pretty low and I think its allowing them to work as advertized. If you were to use a similar setup at a cabin to heat up maybe 40 gallons (continuous circulation) for hot water I have no doubt it would work great.

What is solar cooking and how can it be a sustainable solution for the world? Ph.D. student Matthew Alonso explains. We've all probably seen some form of solar cooking. Many of us made solar ovens out of cardboard boxes as a science experiment as a kid. Now, researchers at the University of Illinois are turning that simple idea into a live-saving innovation.

When we think of the development of the Solar System we imagine... Bonus Videos & "Chemicals of Reality" Premium Video Available @ http://www.patreon.com/strangemysteries Narrated by Jack Daniel www.jackdanielvo.com Ending trailer by Ben Patrick Johnson that before Earth developed life, there was nothing much of note to write home about. There’s a small possibility that Mars may have once had oceans, and an even smaller possibility that it might have harboured life. But in terms of complex life, in terms of habitability, Earth was the guy who shouted first, right? Wrong. If you were to visit Venus today, you would encounter a hellish world that would crush, burn and choke you the moment you step foot on it. Scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies have used a computer modelling system to predict the future of climate change on Earth. If life was able to once exist on Venus, complex life may have had time to arise from it given that the planet probably contained liquid water and it remained habitable for a billion or possibly billions of years.

Graphene is a revolutionary material with a special atomic arrangement that gives it truly unique properties--such as transmitting electrical current faster than any other material. The very first application where graphene is going to be used is probably as a replacement for (the relatively expensive metal) indium selenide in solar cells. Research indicates that graphene is probably going to be massively adopted in the marketplace in a few years
